Record-Low Harvests in Austria and Switzerland Ripple into Northwest Europe’s Tight Potato Market

Austria expects 468,000 t and Switzerland 333,000 t of potatoes, record lows that will reshape import flows from Germany and the Netherlands.

Austria’s potato harvest is estimated 42% below last year at 468,000 tonnes and Switzerland’s at 333,000 tonnes, almost 20% below its six-year average — a double Alpine shortfall that reshapes export flows in an already tight European market.

Two Alpine countries are reporting record-low potato harvests this year, and their shortfalls will be felt across the European market, Boerenbusiness analyst Niels van der Boom wrote in a 10 October analysis.

Statistik Austria estimates the Austrian potato harvest at 468,000 tonnes — down 42% from last year and 34% below the five-year average. The decline is even harder in fries and starch potatoes: the harvested volume lies 45% below what was lifted in 2025. The smallest Austrian potato harvest ever results from an accumulation of factors. Area fell 11% versus 2025, to 18,698 hectares; persistent drought and heat did the greatest damage this summer; and late in the growing season wireworm damage added losses — a problem shared by many growing regions this year. Fewer crops are suitable for sale as a result.

The Swiss story is not much different. Industry organisation Swisspatat puts the harvest at 333,000 tonnes, almost 20% below the six-year average of 411,000 tonnes. The average yield of 29.4 tonnes per hectare has not been this poor in sixty years. Area is stable at 11,000 hectares, and about half of it can be irrigated — irrigation did have an effect, with irrigated plots yielding 55% more than non-irrigated ones, but the end result remains poor. Switzerland’s self-sufficiency rate, normally around 85%, will come to no more than 70–75% this year, Swisspatat estimates. For the table market that is not an immediate problem, but processors will have to anticipate noticeably smaller tubers. Austria’s self-sufficiency, normally slightly lower at around 78%, also falls sharply. Swisspatat director Christian Bucher does not want to speak of a crisis situation, however.

What does this mean for Dutch potato exports? Austria is not a usual destination for Dutch consumption potatoes: neighbour Germany accounts for by far the most imports (50–55%; 156,000 tonnes in 2025, 180,700 tonnes in 2024), with the Czech Republic and Slovakia also major suppliers. The Netherlands ranked seventh in 2025 with 2,118 tonnes — though in 2015, when Austria’s harvest was also very small at 536,000 tonnes, the Netherlands exported 13,240 tonnes there.

Switzerland is the more important destination, and the more volatile one: total Swiss imports swung from over 100,000 tonnes in 2024 to 53,255 tonnes in 2025. After Germany, the Netherlands is the biggest supplier — 17,600 tonnes last year and nearly 40,000 tonnes in 2024; in shortage years, Swiss imports of Dutch potatoes run between 35,000 and over 40,000 tonnes. Switzerland buys above all high-quality potatoes, and the versatile premium variety Agria is a Swiss favourite — though buyers there must compete this season with many other European buyers hunting the same good, coarse Agrias. Strongly increased transport costs could dampen export demand: a one-way Amsterdam–Zürich run is over 800 kilometres, and Swiss diesel is as expensive as or dearer than elsewhere.

Set against that, demand for potatoes is large across Europe. Southern European countries are already in the market, and the very tight availability has laid a firm foundation under the table and export potato market. Around the turn of the year, Europe’s balance of availability and quality can be drawn up; if domestic stocks empty, large demand could emerge. Signals already point to more (early) potatoes being planted in Europe next spring. The market, Van der Boom concludes, has a solid base and good prospects for the 2026/27 season.
